Auburn University in Alabama last week banned TikTok on the school’s Wi-Fi and university-issued devices Insider.
A university spokesperson confirmed the move to Entrepreneur.
“In accordance with the recent executive order from Alabama Governor Kay Ivey requiring all state networks and devices to block access to and from the TikTok social media application, the Auburn University Office of Information Technology began TikTok on to block campus Wi-Fi access on December . 13,” the emailed statement said.
Last week, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey also banned the app on government devices and networks to “fight against this growing security threat.”
The Alabama government’s ban joins a total of at least 14 states that have banned TikTok on government-issued devices due to growing concerns about the app, per The New York Times.
Earlier this month, US lawmakers introduced a bill to ban the app in the US
A separate bill to fund the government and prevent a shutdown will also ban TikTok on all federal devices, the outlet noted.
There are concerns that the Chinese government could gain access to US user data, from entities such as the Indiana Attorney General, who sued the company over privacy concerns earlier this month, and the FBI.
TikTok has said its US user data is processed in Singapore and the US, but a June BuzzFeed report said audio from internal TikTok meetings showed that US user data has been accessed by employees in China.
The company also pushed back a Forbes report that the app had been used to track the locations of US citizens.
The issues reportedly dragged down the process between the Biden administration and TikTok to strike a deal for the app to work in the US
“We believe that those concerns can be fully resolved,” TikTok said Entrepreneur in a statement earlier this week.
As for Auburn, students using campus Wi-Fi will no longer be able to access TikTok. The school does have a TikTok account, as Insider noted, as do other member groups, such as sports teams. The last message about “Auburn Tigers” is from December 2.

Per The Birmingham Newslast week, students received a message from an IT worker, Seth Humphrey, that TikTok would no longer be available on school internet or on-campus housing, in a linked message.
However, that linked notification now appears to read: “Auburn is monitoring developments regarding access to TikTok and will provide information as we receive it. Check back later for more information.”
An Auburn spokesperson said in response to a question about the report that the university’s statement still stands.
