Promising new colony sim Dawn Apart was announced this week, a sci-fi game based on the legacy of Rimworld (opens in new tab) and Factory (opens in new tab) to create a game that simulates an expedition arriving to build automated factories on an alien world. The native aliens aren’t happy about that, of course – and maybe your colonists aren’t either, after seeing how spoiled their new home is getting.
“In DAWN APART, you’ve been sent to the distant planet of Aurora to mine resources, sustain a growing settlement of fortune seekers, and defend it from the ferocious native population. Meet the exacting quotas imposed by your contractor – or spin rewrite the script and start a rebellion against the greedy corporation exploiting your new home,” says a release from developer Industrial Technology and Witchcraft.
It’s cool to see a game that’s not just automation but also colony sim. You have living settlers who have routines and such to take care of in addition to building a factory chain.
The extra interesting twist is that it draws from the voxel-powered destruction seen in Teardown (opens in new tab), and that will matter once you start shelling cities or coming under terrorist attacks from native life. It will also have a lot to do with your goal of excavating the world to mine – or even terraform it.
With few exceptions, the team says, the world will be made up of voxels. Voxels that have physical properties and can be blown up. Wood will burn, stone will crumble and iron will shatter.

“For example,” says the team, “if a shot from a laser gun hits a wooden voxel, it should break and burn through it, igniting other combustible voxels, while if it hits a very heavy metal, it could die and just visually warm that voxel instead.”
That’s going to take a lot of work, of course, but the team hopes to make the game’s destruction and automation “really awe-inspiring” before its release in spring 2024.
Dawn Apart was developed by a fresh indie outfit, Industrial Technology and Witchcraft, based in Berlin, Germany. You can find Dawn Apart on Steam (opens in new tab).
