‘Pound for pound. Head shot. Dead. This lives on!’: Conor McGregor claims Leon Edwards ‘should win EVERYTHING of the year’ after Brit was nominated for best comeback after incredible KO of Kamaru Usman

Conor McGregor praises Leon Edwards, claiming the Briton should win ‘all of the year’ for his incredible finish over Kamaru Usman.

Back on the scorecards, ‘Rocky’ provided one of the most iconic moments in MMA history, knocking out the champion with a swing of his left leg.

It came shortly after the commentator Jon Anik said ‘That’s not the cloth Edwards is cut from’, in reference to him fading to defeat on the scorecards.

The hunter from Birmingham then uttered the immortal line on the microphone: ‘Pound for pound. Head shot. Dead!’

The UFC nominated Edwards for the Comeback of the Year award and McGregor, who is also managed by Paradigm Sports, responded to the clip.

He wrote, ‘Stop the nonsense ‘comeback’ of the year, this is EVERYTHING of the year! No bar. The timing of comments. The timing of the fight. The shot itself. The KO. The consequences. The post speech. Pound for pound head shot. Dead! This lives on!’

Edwards had done well in the opening round, but seemed to fade in the thin air of Salt Lake City.

Usman took control of the fight with his smothering wrestling attacks and Edwards needed a battle cry from his corner to wake him from his slumber.

Just as it looked like the fight was winding down to a decision win for the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’, Edwards pulled him in a move to the right and made contact with the head kick at the perfect moment.

He became the second British champion in UFC history after Michael Bisping and the kick will be played in highlights for years to come.

There will no doubt be a trilogy fight with Usman, but given his recent hand injury, the lead on the London Card in March could be in doubt.

Meanwhile, McGregor is expected to return in spring next year at the earliest and last fought in the defeat to Dustin Poirier, breaking his leg last summer.
