Dune spin-off show gets massive update

Dune: the sisterhood filming is finally underway.

A precursor series to the epic Dune saga, which returned to big screens last year with an Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve and an all-star cast, this HBO Max TV show rewinds the clock to a time when the legendary Bene Gesserit was just the germ of an idea.

Director Johan Renck (Chernobyl) announced yesterday (Nov. 22) that production was underway on Instagram.

“On this day we start filming Dune: the sisterhood for HBO Max. Through machinations set millennia before the story, we descend into the coven that will one day be called the Bene Gesserit,” he captioned a shot of author Frank Herbert’s original novel.

“Say it with me: ‘I must not be afraid. Fear is the murderer of the mind. Fear is the little death that brings utter destruction.'”

This particular quote will be familiar to those who have read Herbert’s seminal story or seen Villeneuve’s first part of the split-two adaptation, with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides uttering it alongside Rebecca Ferguson’s Jessica at a key moment in the film.

In The sisterhood, Emily Watson and Shirley Henderson play the Harkonnen siblings Valya and Tula, while Indira Varma is on board as Empress Natalya, and Travis Fimmel has joined the cast as the enigmatic soldier Desmond Hart.

The show simultaneously shoots alongside Villeneuve’s Dune: part twowhich welcomes newcomers to the series Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Austin Butler and Léa Seydoux next year to the sandy planet Arrakis.

Chalamet praised returning star Zendaya’s role as Chani in the film, sharing last week, “She brings exactly what she brought to the first — which was incredible — but in greater abundance.

“And she really has become a sister. I’m so thankful to have her as a partner, sister and friend.”

Dune: the sisterhood will stream on HBO Max while Dune: part two is scheduled for theatrical release on November 3, 2023.
