Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale fans will meet a younger version of Cain Dingle on Boxing Day as the soap returns to 1991.

The ITV1 soap broadcasts a big twist for the Dingle family over the festive season as Cain is revealed to have a long-lost brother named Caleb, played by former Waterloo Road star Will Ash. Cain has known about Caleb for years and keeps his existence a secret from the rest of the Dingles.

Don’t waste time filling in the blanks, Emmerdale turns the clock back over 30 years to reveal that Cain and Caleb met when they were younger.

Digital spy recently spoke to Aiden Kane, who plays young Cain, for an exclusive interview about the role.

How did your involvement in this special episode come about?

“It was quite a lengthy process with the auditions – there were four or five rounds. It started with me sending in a self-recording and then I went to the studios for the other rounds.

Emmerdale told me from the start that the audition was for a younger Cain Dingle because I had to learn the mannerisms right away. I had to show that I was doing everything I could to be Cain.”

Were you a regular customer Emmerdale viewer prior to?

“I’m not going to lie – I wasn’t! But as soon as I got through the first self-tape, I immediately started watching the show to see what the current storylines were and to pick up on what Cain is like.

“This was the first time I auditioned for Emmerdalealthough I’ve auditioned for other soap operas before.

“I’m really glad I got the role, but at the same time it’s quite disturbing because they’re flashback scenes for an established character and it means I can’t really do much more with Emmerdale. It’s a shame, because I had a really good time there.”

Did you meet your co-star Riccardo Drayton, who plays young Caleb, during the auditions?

“Yes, I met Riccardo in the last audition round. During the auditions you saw people you had seen in the previous rounds, but the numbers got smaller every time.

“Riccardo wasn’t able to get to the first three rounds so I didn’t meet him until the last round. They had two Cains and two Calebs towards the end.

“They put me and Riccardo together for the final round, so we had to do some scenes together during the auditions. I think Emmerdale had in mind it would be me and Riccardo, or the other two actors.

“It was really good working with Riccardo, he’s a brilliant actor and I really enjoyed it.”

Emmerdale remained silent about the flashback for a while after you finished filming. Was it hard to keep it a secret?

“Yeah, it’s been quiet! I’m kind of relieved to be able to talk about it now because it’s been quite stressful. I told people I was filming something, but I couldn’t really say what it was.

“But of course I told my mom and asked her to keep it a secret until it was announced. My mom is a huge one Emmerdale fan, so she’s buzzing and she can’t wait. She’s been posting it all over Facebook and Instagram now that the news is out. I think she’s more excited to watch it than I am, to be honest!”

What can we expect from the flashback episode?

“There’s a history there between Cain and Caleb. Apparently Cain kept quiet about his brother for a long time.

“Now it’s all coming out and the flashback shows why Cain kept Caleb a secret from all his family. It’s going to cause some drama!”

Are there any scenes between young Cain and young Chas (played by Maddy Barker)?

“Yeah, there’s one or two scenes between young Cain and Chas. It was probably my favorite scene I did because it was a really fun one.”

The Emmerdale bosses have already praised you for handling Cain’s mannerisms so well. Was that important to you?

“Very important. Obviously Cain Dingle is such an iconic character in the Emmerdale world. Jeff Hordley has been playing the role for so long, so I really wanted to get it right.

“Something that Emmerdale did, which was very helpful, was sending me a montage of Cain scenes. I got into a rhythm to watch that at least once a day.

“Another thing that was important to me was to also watch Cain when he was younger, so I went to YouTube and watched very old episodes of Emmerdale. I wanted to see how Jeff Cain played when he first came on the show.”

What was it like meeting Jeff when you were on set?

“Really nice – he’s a really laid back guy. He gave me his phone number and said, ‘If you ever want to ask me any questions while you’re on set, text me or call me and I’ll be happy to help. ‘.”

Did this experience instill a taste of the soap world in you?

“Yes, absolutely. This is the first professional movie role I’ve done. Everyone always said that Emmerdale is very fast so you have to be on the ball but I really enjoyed it.

“It was nice to have that liveliness and I loved the rhythm of it.”

“Probably just more auditions! I also have a few theater shows scheduled for next year.”

Will you watch the episode with family on Boxing Day?

“At first I was nervous about that because I didn’t want people to come over and watch the episode and I didn’t like it! But now I’ve had really good feedback from the producers and other people who watched the episode. am a little more relieved and less stressed.

“I’m looking forward to watching it and we’re inviting the whole family on Boxing Day to watch it together.”
