House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy quits new film role

House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy has dropped out of the upcoming movie project Anna.

According to deadline, the actor left the film due to a scheduling conflict and is replaced by Naomi Battrick (the snake queen, Jamestown).

Previously titled Mother Russiathe biopic tells the story of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya and the events leading up to her murder in 2006. D’Arcy was set to play Politkovskaya’s daughter Vera opposite Maxine Peake, who stars as Anna.

Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones) and Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs will also appear in the biopic, playing Nobel Prize-winning newspaper editor Dmitry Muratov (Hinds) and Anna’s husband Sacha (Isaacs). Harry Lawtey (Industry) stars Anna’s son Ilya and Ellie Bamber (nocturnal animals) positions as an intern Elena Kostyuchenko.

Politkovskaya was known for her courageous reporting, exposing corruption under Vladimir Putin and covering the Chechen war.

She continued her work despite death threats and survived a poisoning in 2004. Politkovskaya was murdered as she left her apartment building in October 2006.

D’Arcy is currently enjoying huge success as one of HBO’s breakout stars Game of Thrones precursor. The actor stars as the older version of Rhaenyra Targaryen opposite Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans and Olivia Cooke.

They recently spoke about what it was like to see the younger version of their character, played by Milly Alcock, on screen, saying it was like “looking at camcorder footage of you as a kid”.

“You used to recognize that person. You empathize with that person. And you feel that you are distinctly different at this point in your life,” they said.

“I really felt that when I first saw episode one, this kind of eerie familiarity. Yeah, it was actually very moving.”
