Pokémon GO New Year Event 2023

It may still be very pre-Christmas when we hear this news, but The Pokémon Company is looking forward to the next big event as it has announced the 2023 New Year celebration for Pokémon GO.

The event runs from December 31, 2022 at 8:00 PM through to January 4, 2023, at 8:00 PM (local time). During this time, the game will really amp up the festivities with special outfits and poses for your avatars, wild Pokémon will also appear in their finery with hats aplenty, and there will also be some familiar faces hatching from eggs.

We’ve put together a list of everything happening during the event on the Pokémon GO website, read on to find out all the details.

The event will see the game debut of Pikachu is wearing a party hat – with some shiny variants that are in the wild.

In addition, you can Noctowl in a New Year’s outfit by evolving Hoothoot into a New Year’s outfit during the event.

Avatar Items

The 2023 New Year event will bring with it two new avatar items, each of which can be purchased from the in-game store. Both the Pikachu Party Hat and Party Popper Pose will appear in the shop at the start of the event and will remain there once the event is over.

During the period, themed stickers will also be available. These can be redeemed by spinning Poké Stops, opening gifts, or purchasing them from the in-game store.

Wild encounters

The following Pokémon will appear in the wild during the festive season:

  • Hoothoot in a New Year’s outfit
  • Pikachu is wearing a party hat
  • Wurmple wearing a party hat


Each of the following Pokémon can be hatched from 7km Eggs during the event, with Shiny variants of each:

  • Azurill
  • Cleffa
  • Elekid
  • Igglybuff
  • magby
  • Pichu wears a party hat
  • Smoochum
  • Togepi
  • Tyrogue
  • Wynaut

Field research tasks

New Year’s themed research tasks will be available during the event, which will earn Stardust as a reward for completion.


The following Pokémon will appear during the event in One-Star, Three-Star, Five-Star, and Mega Raids. A glossy version of each is available.

One star raids

  • Bulbasaur is wearing a party hat
  • Charmander wears a party hat
  • Hoothoot in a New Year’s outfit
  • Pikachu is wearing a party hat
  • Squirtle wearing a party hat

Three-star robberies

  • Gengar wears a party hat
  • Nidorino wears a party hat
  • Raticate is wearing a party hat
  • Wob buffet with party hat on

Event Bonuses

During the 2023 New Year’s event, two egg-based event bonuses will be introduced during the term. The first of these halves shows the hatching distance of eggs for those placed in an incubator, while the second assigns a quarter hatching distance for the first three eggs that hatched in the app widget.
