Supernatural and The Winchesters star Jensen Ackles has revealed he was on the hunt for the lead role in HBO’s series adaptation of The last of us.
Based on the popular video game of the same name, the apocalyptic drama follows hardened survivor Joel (The Mandalorian‘s Pedro Pascal) and 14-year-old Ellie (Game of ThronesBella Ramsey) as they team up to find the cure for a deadly virus.
While Joel’s role eventually went to Pascal, Ackles had been competing for the role.

“I was pushing really hard, but I don’t think I was really in the mix or really had a chance at it,” he recently told fans during a Supernatural convention, adding that the series was “high” on his “radar” (via Just shocked).
He may not have secured that part, but The boys actor has revealed that he will be filming for another game-related project, though he was unwilling to give further details.
“I’m about to head to LA to film a whole day for a new game coming out as a character… I can’t say what it is yet, but you’ll find out soon enough,” he teased .

Last month, Ackles revealed he had been considered to star in deadpool, a role that eventually went to Ryan Reynolds.
“There was definitely a movie I talked about a lot. I wasn’t available, so the train just stopped there,” he said.
“But if I had been available, I would have had to jump through the studio hoops and the producer’s hoops and everything. But I had a really good shot, and it’s a movie that I really, really like.”
The last of us premieres on HBO and HBO Max January 15, 2023.
