Take-Two Interactive’s Private Division label and Piccolo Studio announced After Us at The Game Awards.

The exploration adventure game will launch in Spring 2023 for PC on Steam and on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It looks really beautiful and looks quite creative. I’ve talked to the developers about it and we’ll publish that interview shortly. Suffice to say, their take is that while it’s devastating to think about the post-human world, the title is “hopeful.” It kind of reminded me of Thatgamecompany’s Flower, as there are no words in the game (for now), but it’s clearly very different in many ways.

In the game, you play as Gaia, the Spirit of Life, to bring hope to a broken planet in a surreal, post-human journey. You’ll traverse environments saving the souls of extinct animals and harness Gaia’s powers to fight the dangers that plague an inhospitable Earth.

You play as Gaia in After Us.

After Us takes Piccolo Studio’s style of storytelling and combines it with immersive exploration and adventure. Gaia must jump, slide, run, wall ride and swim to avoid deadly obstacles and enemies. As the embodiment of life, she has the power to help restore and reconstruct the planet. By emanating bursts of light, Gaia stimulates new plant growth and reveals new paths to traverse.

“After Us is a game about legacy and hope,” Alexis Corominas, game director at Piccolo Studio, said in a statement. “We wanted to create a powerful gaming experience that combines a gripping story with creative game design and unique mechanics. We look forward to seeing everyone’s reactions to the game when it releases next spring.”

After Us depicts a fantastical world brought about by the destructive actions of an unbridled society, experienced by the player in ten different biomes. Players learn the ultimate fate of various majestic creatures, such as the last whale harpooned, the last eagle in a cage, or the last deer hunted, before resurrecting their spirits to resurrect the world. Each new environment presents Gaia with new challenges and tells the stories of these animals’ last moments before their climax of rebirth.

“A core pillar of Private Division is empowering studios to realize their creative vision, and it is exciting to see Piccolo Studio build on their previous success with Arise, in this new and ambitious game,” said Michael Worosz, chief strategy officer at Take-Two. Interactive and head of Private Division, in a statement. “After Us beautifully combines an artistic, abstract world, exciting gameplay, and a powerful, universal story into an unforgettable experience that we are proud to publish from Private Division.”

After Us is scheduled for PC on Steam, and on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in Spring 2023 during Take-Two’s fiscal year 2024 (the year ending March 31, 2024) for $30.
