‘I’m still thinking about it’: Christian Pulisic believes the US’ World Cup loss to the Netherlands would have been different if he hadn’t missed a super early chance to score… and reveals that his Chelsea teammates are under were impressed by USMNT

Christian Pulisic has opened up the brilliant scoring chance he missed in the opening minutes of America’s World Cup defeat to the Netherlands.

Pulisic had a one-on-one chance saved by Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert in the third minute and the US team went on to lose the knockout match 3–1 in the last 16 of the tournament.

Speaking on Tim Ream’s ‘Indirect’ podcast, Pulisic spoke of the regret he feels at missing out on such a good opportunity to help his team lead.

“If I had finished that chance, the game would have turned out differently,” he said. ‘I’d like that back. I’m still thinking about it. It’s a learning experience. I think there’s a reason why it didn’t go in, things went the way they went. It all happens for a reason.’

But the 24-year-old explained how his fledgling US team impressed in Qatar, revealing that his Chelsea teammates were impressed with how they paid.

Pulisic also believes the experience will help his team grow in time for the 2026 tournament, which will be hosted by the United States alongside Mexico and Canada.

“I think my main takeaway would just be the experience that a lot of this team has in their pocket right now,” said Pulisic. “For example, when I come back here with my Chelsea teammates, they’re all about, ‘You guys actually have a good team.’ We didn’t know. You looked good, you looked good against England, you have a strong team.’

“I knew we had a strong team, and once everyone came together you could see it. And now that the World Cup is next in the States, I find these experiences so important.’

“People don’t understand, it’s just getting that experience and having that little bit of calm next time.

“And a lot of the core guys who will probably still be around (in 2026) is the best thing about it. So I think that’s what I take away from it the most. Now that I feel like I have this experience, I feel even more comfortable on the field. I’ve stood and played on the highest podium.”

At club level, Pulisic faces an uncertain future and could leave Chelsea in the January transfer window in search of more regular playing time.
